# The Jamestown Massacre occurred on Good Friday, March 22, 1622
# The Powhatan Indians killed 347 settlers, almost a third of the tons inhabitants
# There were many reasons that the Indians attacked the settlers
# In 1613, John Rolfe created a sweeter version of tobacco, causing the settlers to want even more land to grow tobacco
# Tobacco leached the nutrients out of the ground in 1-2 years, so when they couldn’t farm tobacco in those spots, they pushed deeper into Indian territory , destroying the land that the Indians use to hunt, and also served as buffer zones between villages
# In 1614, John Rolfe married Pocahontas, Chief Powhantan’s favorite daughter, which caused the Indians to live in peace with the settlers
# However, in 1616, the aging Powhatan was replaced by two of his maternal brothers, Itoyatan, and Opechancanough
# Also, the English began pressuring the Powhatan Indians to send some of their children to English schools, and convert them to Christianity, a request the Indians found intolerable
# In 1620, Pocahontas died of the plague in England , though it took two years for the news to reach Opechancanough
# Also, just two weeks before the attack, English settlers killed a leading Powhatan warrior and Shaman named Nemattanew
