Wednesday, Feb. 25th:  1st 4th and 5th periods:  Do Vocapplication #11.

Fourth only: Read "Red Scare" article from (an old) UpFront.  Then comment on this question below. You first need to read a classmate's entry, comment on his/her entry, and add your own new opinion.

Arthur Miller was very close to those who were blacklisted from Hollywood. He was briefly married to Marilyn Monroe, which put him more in the spotlight. "Miller was himself blacklisted by Hollywood when he refused to testify in front of the HUAC. However, this did not stop his plays being performed on stage."(Spartacus 2009)  His writing The Crucible, was in large part, a reaction to the Hollywood Blacklists, and the "witch hunts" of MacCarthyism in general. Remember, it was first performed in 1953.  He felt he had to remind people of the harm that can come from minding other people's business.

Here's your question. What issue, that is a crisis in the world right now, would you try to shock people into the inanity of their actions (or lack of action)? For a challenge, you could reach into history and find a similar mistake (because as a species, we seem to repeat our mistakes), and make your argument based on this past event. (Yes, this would require some research). Persuade the reader that the issue is in dire need of attention. Write at least an organized paragraph with two reasons. Post your entry below.

Monday, Nov. 17th:   Blog about two of the three questions below.  Also comment on a classmate's response. "I agree with Susan about the evil, but I also think that..." another component of this blog is to use new vocabulary from lesson 5. Try: audacious or audacity, depict and rebuke.

1. What would Golding and Bradbury agree on? Where does the evil come from in both / each story?

2.  How does Bradbury use symbolism to give depth to the witch? Discuss the symbolism of the tatto artist's sensory limitations and extrasensory enhancement.  How does the fact that certain of her senses aer prposely denied her, relate to her ability to predict the future?

What's the creepiest thing about her (to you)? I think the dust having not been disturbed for weeks / months / years and imagining her not moving, but alive, waiting....creeps me out.

Hey there folks. The best way to study for Wordly Wise, is to go to their website:

www.wordlywise3000.com

It has all your words with people that speak to you. They say the word, the definition, and a sentence with the word in it.  They also have super fun games and little quiz questions to help you review.

There are many situations that are in desperate need of attention, and I think that one of these issues would definitely be global warming. This is an issue that effects the whole world not just the U.S. and it is something that could destroy our Earth. One reason this is so desperate is because it will take everyone on this Earth's help to fix the problem. As well the effects could put us all at risk. It hurts our fresh water sources, it could flood many major cities around the world, it could cause plants and crops to fail and leave the whole world famished and languishing. The only way to stop this is by everyone getting involved and trying to prevent and ultimately reverse orur damages.

I agree with Rachel, with the fact that global warming is a major crisis. One crisis that is also big is all the drugs being made in Mexico. All these drugs are being illegally migrated over to the U.S. This is rasing the amount of drugs in the U.S. This is aslo rasing the crime rate. More and more people in the U.S. are becoming criminals becasue there is more and more drugs and the drugs aren' t always cheap. Many people can make lots of mony of drugs. This can also corup cops. The cops are supposed to catch the drug sellers. But instead they are also seeing the money they can make in selling drugs and become partners with the drug lords. This allows more and more drugs to be sold and less cops to catch the criminals. Drugs can also kill many people. This is raising the death rate, not by much but it still is. Some of these drugs are still coming from Mexico and we need to stop it. We can either make security on the border better, or we can try to put more trustworthy cops that won't succumb to selling drugs.

I completely agree with Rachel and Jared. Global warming is a very severe issue that can soon be iriversible. Global warming is and idea most catagorize as a desperate situation because it affects not just one country, such as civil war or illegal immigration, but all of Earth. Global warming could cause things such as increase the global sealevel by a more than negligable amount. Also, global warming could reduce rainfall everywhere around the world which could reduce the sliver of fresh water that we already have. So we can either plument into turmoil or or make a dramatic change.

Slator and Rachel are both correct about the turmoil that global warming is bringing to this planet. Another issue is education; women all over the world aren’t getting the education they need. Take Afghanistan for example, it is one of the poorest countries of the world and so 80% of the women there are illiterate. From 1996-2001 the Taliban was in control and they wouldn’t allow women to go to school. These innocent ladies, who are only trying to receive the education they deserve, are being injured. I am almost certain that if the women of the world were able to receive a decent education they would most likely be able to help this planet cope with all of the problems. Education is important and women need to receive more knowledge.

I also agree with Rachel nd Jared. Golabal Warming is n issue that must be dealt with , otherwise many island countries and costal areas will suffer. The melting of the ice caps is very severe and has to have the effort of the population of the earth not just some people. Another issue that is a big crisis is the war in Iraq. There has been so many Americans as well as Iranians that have suffered since this war has started. I hop that Obama will bring back the troops soon!
